ALROSA, the world’s leading producer of natural diamonds by volume, has for the second consecutive year received an internationally recognized verification certificate confirming the carbon neutrality of its diamonds and their negative carbon footprint. Having improved the production process, the company enhanced its diamond carbon-footprint performance by 60% compared with 2024.

In 2025, the annual volume of carbon dioxide absorption across ALROSA mining and production facilities exceeded emissions by 126,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent—nearly three and a half times the result achieved a year earlier, when net absorption totalled 37,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. The carbon footprint of ALROSA’s diamonds stood at -1.18 kg of CO₂ equivalent per carat, a 60% improvement on the 2024 figure of -0.71 kg of CO₂ equivalent per carat. This metric applies to the entire 2025 diamond production of 29.8 million carats.

“ALROSA remains the only mining company in the world to have officially confirmed carbon neutrality for both its product and operations. We have achieved this through our own production activities. We believe that industry leadership is defined not only by market position, but also by the ability to create long-term value for society and the environment. This approach should become the new industry standard,” said Pavel Marinychev, CEO of ALROSA.

ALROSA first proved carbon neutrality in 2024. Prior to that, the company worked with scientists to demonstrate that diamond-bearing ore—kimberlite—from its deposits in Yakutia and the Arkhangelsk Region can absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during the company’s production activities.

“Today, we are focused on enhancing kimberlite’s carbon-absorption capacity while also reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency. In particular, we are replacing petroleum products with a lower-carbon alternative—natural gas. In 2025, we completed the gasification of the Udachny Mining and Processing Division and finished construction of a gas pipeline to our Nakyn site. We also continue our transition to natural gas for all operational vehicles. Besides, 76% of the electricity consumed by ALROSA is now generated from renewable energy sources,” said Anastasia Gabrashitova, Head of ALROSA Environmental Centre.

ALROSA’s 2025 CO₂ emissions and removals report was verified by TÜV AUSTRIA Standards & Compliance Ltd., an international auditing company specializing in environmental and climate protection services, including validation and verification of greenhouse gas reporting.
